Georgia State Requirements for Insurance Agents

Agent & Adjuster Hour Requirements:

  • 15 hrs annually (if licensed less than 20 years)
  • 10 hrs annually (if licensed 20 years or more)

Line Specific Requirements: Courses must be in license type held

Flood

  • 3 hrs - Property/Casualty agents who sell flood insurance policies must complete a one time 3 hour course on NFIP Basic Flood education

Ethics

  • 3 hrs - Agent and Adjusters must complete 3 hrs of Ethics as a part of the total requirement

Education Methods:

  • Classroom
  • Self-Study*
  • Online*

* Self-study or online final exams are required to be monitored by a disinterested non insurance-related third party (i.e., not a relative, friend or business associate).

Compliance Renewal Date:

  • December 31, annually (renewals received 11/2 through 12/31 require a $15 late fee)

Carryover of Hours:

  • Excess hours (to a maximum of 1/2 of CE requirement for the next renewal period) can be carried forward to the next renewal period)
  • Excess Ethics hours may be applied to regular hours, but not carried forward as Ethics hours

Course Repetition:

  • Courses can not be taken for credit more than once in a 2 year period (except courses on ethics, current issues or legislative updates)

Reporting Method:

  • Course provider reports credits to the CE Administrator

Exemptions of CE Requirement:

  • Non-residents
  • Individuals who hold a nonactive license due to having been licensed as an agent for 10 consecutive years or more and do not perform insurance functions other than receiving renewal or deferred commissions
  • Individuals that hold a CLU, CPCU, FLMI, CIC, CEBS, ChFC, CFP, CISR, CRM or AAI designation must complete 6 hrs annually (3 hrs being Ethics)
  • Newly licensed individuals may use their prelicensing education certificate for CE credit for the first year
